THE SITUATION IN LATIN AMERICA
The coronavirus pandemic has had an unprecedented impact in Latin America, particularly for low-income households and working women.
Considered to be the worst recession in Latin America in the last 100 years with a rise of unemployment by 12 million, declining incomes, and growth of school dropouts, massive consequences in social inequalities are expected to deepen.
The crisis will likely result in an increase in informal jobs, who are the only source of survival of poorer families that will be forced to send their children to work.
At the same time, there will be a decrease in job security, income, and basic protection mechanisms, particularly in sectors such as retail, restaurant, hotel, and home sectors where the majority of women work.
